Did you know aircraft and racing cars have been using purified nitrogen to inflate tyres instead of compressed air for a long time. One reason is because tyre pressure is reduced at a much slower rate, enabling better road holding and enhanced gripping capabilities.
Nitrogen tyres don't leak as much through the rubber like oxygen does, therefore you will lose less pressure, so you won’t have to keep checking tyre pressure as often as usual. In addition, you will always be ensuring maximum fuel efficiency as under-inflated tyres will increase fuel consumption, and of course wear your tyres prematurely.
Also, the inside the wheel will not corrode as nitrogen is a dry gas whereas in regular tyres the water vapour in compressed air could cause corrosion to the wheel.
Nitrogen Keeps Your Tyres Cool
Another advantage of using nitrogen in your tyres - when tyres get hot, their inflation pressure increases. This makes the tyre's footprint (the part that touches the road) much smaller. A smaller footprint can cause your tyres to lose grip. Therefore keeping the tyres cool is key.

At Phoenix we are happy for you to request to have new tyres inflated with nitrogen instead of compressed air. To do this we would fully deflate the tyres you are using and re-fill them with nitrogen.
If you make the choice to switch to having your tyres filled with nitrogen it is very important that you bear in mind that all 4 tyres and your spare tyre must be changed at the same time and going forwards, it is imperative that you only use nitrogen when topping your tyre pressure up.
How long do nitrogen tyres last?
On average, tyres filled with air lose around 1.5 psi (pounds per square inch) every month, whereas tyres filled with nitrogen will lose around the same amount in 3-4 months. It is therefore likely you will have to top off your nitrogen filled tyres less often than if they were filled with air.
Although tyre pressure is lost at a slower rate when filled with nitrogen, you will still need to regularly check your tyre pressure! Remember pure nitrogen will leak more slowly through the liner than oxygen, but you still need to check the condition and pressure of your tyres regularly.
